It's all four wheels, but what is a go-kart? Why is a kart steering wheel heavy?-XperKart

Kart features include four wheels, mechanical steering, rear-wheel drive, an open cockpit and a high thrust-to-weight ratio for track driving. When built in-house, karts would have trouble turning corners due to the lack of a differential, as the rear axle was one piece and it was not possible to get the two wheels to turn at different speeds. To solve this problem, kart design utilized the “main pin camber” effect to improve cornering performance.

Main pin camber is the angle between the main pin axis and the plumb line in the longitudinal vertical plane, i.e. the angle of inclination of the front wheel spindle relative to the vertical.

The main pin rearward tilt helps the vehicle to drive stably, and the tire contact point B is no longer the center when steering, but the virtual point A, which ensures that the front wheels are stable and automatically return to the right. However, if the tilt angle γ is too large, steering will cause the inner wheel to fall and the outer wheel to rise, causing the outer front side of the chassis to lower and the inner rear side to rise, and the pressure on the inner rear wheels to decrease, or perhaps even leave the ground. This time is equivalent to only the outer rear wheels having power, the front wheels have no power from the driven wheels, so the kart can steer well or even drift in place.

When driving a kart, avoid braking while steering as this will cause the vehicle to spin in place. This is because when only one wheel is gripping the ground, braking will only slow that wheel down while the other wheel bucks, resulting in varying speeds on both sides, which can cause spinning. Additionally, the greater the angle of rearward tilt of the main pins, the more resistance there is when steering, making the direction feel heavier.

To summarize, a vehicle with a large angle of main pin camber is defined as a go-kart. The core of a go-kart is its cornering performance, and its raison d'être is to challenge the limits of cornering. Heavy steering is an inherent characteristic, not a fault or error.
